Library awarded $765,000
from State's Capital Grant Program

The much anticipated new Leonardtown Library received a very welcomed boost from the state....$765,000 was awarded by the Maryland State Department of Education, Division of Library Development and Services, under the FY2011 County Library Capital Grants program.  The funds will be used to support the design costs for this new library which will be built on the Hayden Farm property.  The Board of County Commissioners FY 2010 to FY 2013 Capital Budget includes $13,270,000 for this project.

The ever-increasing number of customers at the Leonardtown Library demonstrates the need for a larger and more modern facility.  In FY2009 the total circulation increased by 11% and thus far in FY2010 the circulation has increased by 19%.  During this past September, the Leonardtown Library:

  • had 1,024 visitors per day
  • checked out 1,619 items per day
  • logged 160 public computer uses per day. Leonardtown Library

Once the architect is chosen, by the end of January 2010, public meetings will be conducted to solicit ideas and suggestions from our customers.   So keep dreaming about what you would like to have in your new library!
