2014 One Maryland One Book omob

The Distance Between Us:  A Memoir by Reyna Grande One Maryland One Book Logo

This year's selection for the One Maryland One Book (OMOB), the state-wide community read sponsored by the Maryland Humanities Council, is The Distance Between Us: a Memoir by Reyna Grande.

Cover of bookThe Distance Between Us is the author's compelling story of her childhood before and after entering the U.S. as an undocumented immigrant. At age nine the author left Mexico and the overburdened household of her stern grandmother and entered the U.S. to live with her father.  She quickly realized that life in America and with her father was far from perfect.

Copies of the book are available at the branches and also can be downloaded as an audio or eBook from the library's website.  A few copies have been left in public places around the tri-county to be picked up, read, and passed on.

A book discussion is scheduled at both Charlotte Hall and Leonardtown in October.  The author will be appearing at Waldorf West library in Charles County on Oct. 1.

What's your story? Tell it... get published... win $100 gift card

The libraries in Charles,Calvert, and St. Mary's counties along with Southern Maryland Regional Library and College of Southern Maryland Diversity Institute are hosting a story writing contest for teens and adults as part of the OMOB.  All acceptable entries will be published in a book.

The teen and adult winners will each receive a $100 gift card and a signed copy of the The Distance Between Us.  The first runner-up in each category will receive a $25 gift card and also a signed copy of the OMOB.  All winners will receive a copy of the published book of collected stories.

If you have a story to tell, we want to hear it.  Submit your story (fiction or nonfiction) related to one of the themes of The Distance Between Us by midnight October 17.  The rules and guidelines will be posted on smrla.org/storycollection Sept. 2 when the contest begins.
