Leonardtown Library Project Update

Tentative Schedule as of May, 2014:

April 2014 Schematic Design presentation to County Commissioners
May 2014     An additional $709,800 programmed in the Capital Budget.  Prior Capital Budget includes $2,496,500 for this project. Total allocation: $3,206,300
May 2014 Completion of Design Development plans by architect
June 2014 Approval of renovation design by Maryland Historic Trust
July 2014 Completion of Construction Documents and specifications by architect
July 2014 FY 2015 Capital Budget funding available July 1, 2014
August 2014 Review of draft Invitation for Bid (IFB) by County Procurement Department
September 2014             Solicitation of IFB by County Procurement Department
December 2014            Construction contract awarded
January 2015 Renovation begins.  Projected to be 6-9 month construction project. At this point, it is not known how long the library will be closed. Every effort will be made to provide some level of services during this process.


Major needs to be addressed by this renovation:    

  • Update or replace all the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.  Install new HVAC system and humidity controls, a sprinkler/fire system, and new bathrooms.
  • Provide elevator access to second floor
  • Create study rooms and quiet areas
  • Provide more outlets for technology and wireless customers
  • Create area to serve as instructional computer lab
  • Expand children’s area and separate it from teen area
  • Improve delivery ramp and receiving area adjacent to the parking lot, away from the customer entrance
  • Create one entrance, off the back parking lot.  Front entrance to be emergency exit only
  • Replace leaking windows and all exterior doors
  • Create a single customer service desk.
  • Install new carpet
  • Improve exterior facade
