Computer Classes

Adult classes are available at all branches.

 

All classes are free but registration is required due to limited space.  Individual instruction is available at Charlotte Hall and Leonardtown by request.

We also have Computer Software Video Classes. Check out our series on Microsoft Excel.

On-going classes offered regularly:

  • Introduction to Computers—Learn the components, vocabulary and basics of using a personal computer.
  • Introduction to Windows—Learn the basics of the Windows operating system.
  • Introduction to the Internet—Learn the terms, basic page features and basics of web searching. Discover tips on browsing and evaluating sites.
  • Introduction to Email—Set up an email account and learn to send and receive emails.

 

Classes offered periodically:

  • Introduction to Excel—Learn the basics to create and use an Excel spreadsheet
  • Intermediate Excel Part I—Learn intermediate formulas in Excel and work with rows, columns, and worksheets. Pre-requisite: Familiarity with basic Excel functions.
  • Intermediate Excel  Part II—Learn intermediate formulas in Excel and work with freezing panes, sorting data, creating a chart, adding comments, hyperlinks and internal references, and printing options. Pre-requisite: Familiarity with basic Excel functions.
  • Introduction to Publisher—Learn the basics of Publisher, Microsoft’s desktop publishing program used to create flyers, cards, certificates, and more!
  • Resume Basics in Word 2007—Learn the basics of writing a resume, the different types of resumes, and how to use the resume templates in Word 2007. Prerequisite:  Ability to use a mouse.
  • Introduction to Digital Photo Editing—Learn how to use the scanner and camera wizard to transfer photos to a computer and discover free tools for photo editing.  NO digital camera required.  Prerequisite:  Ability to use a mouse.
  • The Internet and Genealogy—Learn where to start your genealogy search using free Internet websites, the library’s databases, Social Security Death Index, and U.S. Census.  Prerequisite: Knowledge of Internet

    Learn to open, create, format, print, and save documents in Word 2010. Ages 7-12. Parents learn along with kids! Please sign up with the child's name and include the parent name alongside.

    Monday, March 19, 2012 - 5:30 PM at Lexington Park Library Computer Lab

    This basic class will introduce you to starting genealogy (family tree) searches using free Internet websites. The class covers the St. Mary’s County Library genealogy databases, Social Security Death Index, the Census of the United States and hands on exercises. Knowledge of the Internet is a prerequisite.

  • Open Computer Lab

    Monday, March 26, 2012 - 2:00 PM at Leonardtown Library Meeting Room

    During our open computer lab, participants will have a chance to work on the computer skills they want to improve upon. Computer skills covered will include, but not be limited to: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and checking out and downloading e-Books. Job search skills, such as keyboarding, filling out online applications, and setting up e-mail accounts, will also be addressed. A trained staff member will be on hand to answer questions and work with individuals. Participants are asked to bring their own headphones to class.

    Learn the basics of how to get your digital photos from your camera or memory card, onto your computer, uploaded to Facebook/Craigslist/Shutterfly, as well as basic photo editing techniques (cropping, rotating, re-sizing).
