We are excited to announce that St. Mary’s County Library has received a grant through the Maryland State Library and the Institute of Museum and Library Services to build a Mobile Library!
An update of the bookmobile, our Mobile Library will have a collection of books, movies, and more to checkout, WiFi, computer workstations, and programming spaces. It will visit communities that are farther from our Library buildings, as well as senior facilities and day care centers, to deliver resources and connectivity. It is an exciting expansion of Library services, bringing the Library to you.
The vehicle is already being built by a Maryland company. (See the planned layout – PDF ) We hope to be on the road by October 2022! We will develop a schedule to visit locations farther from our Library buildings (especially where children reside). If you’d be interested in discussing a possible stop, let us know. We will partner with St. Mary’s County Health Department, Social Services Department, NAACP, and others to develop literacy and service projects and programming of all types. The Mobile Library will also provide storytime and other events.
The $250,000 grant will pay for much of the vehicle, but total costs not including the collection will be over $310,000. The St. Mary’s County Library Foundation is raising funds to support this powerful new way to provide community services. If you’d like to donate, you can do so online below, or send a check made out to “St. Mary’s County Library Foundation” to 23630 Hayden Farm Lane, Leonardtown MD 20650. All donations will be acknowledged on the Foundation’s webpage. Donors of $1,000 or more will be invited to a VIP event at the ribbon cutting for the Mobile Library.
