As the music changes, so do the colors, shapes, and textures—will a song make you paint bold zigzags, soft swirls, or something totally new? There’s no right or wrong, just express how music makes you feel.

This introductory, hands-on class will cover how to use an electronic die-cutting machine called the Cricut Maker to use the “print then cut” feature to create a printed sticker sheets! Participants will also learn the basics of Cricut Design Space, the software used to create endlessly customizable designs compatible with Cricut cutting machines. No experience necessary, all materials provided.

NOTE: This program is for teens aged 12-18. Adult participants welcome if accompanied by a teen aged 12-18. Please register each person who will be participating.

Creating something doesn't have to be intimidating, or time consuming. Instead, it can be a chance to explore creativity, the ability to make mistakes, and an opportunity to try something new.

Each session will feature a small art and/or craft project that can be completed in an hour to an hour and a half.

This month we will be trying out fabric crafts by making a small stuffed fly out of fabric. 

Therapy animals from Pets on Wheels are visiting the library! Friends of all ages are invited to practice reading with a furry friend, or just enjoy some pets and snuggles.

No experience needed! Characters will be provided for ease of adventure. We'll have a Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition Game every time, while we may have new games to teach as well.

Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop roleplaying game that promotes creative thinking and problem-solving while utilizing strategic thinking and social skills. Teamwork is key as adventurers work together to save the day.

Are you new to genealogy or just need a refresher on how to improve your research? This four-part series is aimed at helping you form a good foundation to build upon throughout your journey.

Over the course of this series you will learn methodology, what is available online and what repositories have information that can help answer your genealogical questions.

Throughout these sessions you will:

1. Understand how to begin collecting and compile family history information.
2. Learn the importance of sources and documentation.
3. Learn which records provide different types of information.
4. Know the difference between online searching and repositories such as courthouses, cemeteries, historical societies, and state and national archives.

Eve Love, a native of St. Mary’s County, is an ardent student of history and genealogy. Her interest in family history began as a young adult listening to family stories. She has been conducting personal genealogy research for approximately forty years. Eve is a Member of the St. Mary’s County Genealogical Society and has served as President, 1st Vice President and Secretary. She has attended numerous seminars to expand her knowledge and research techniques and has taught Genealogy Classes at the College of Southern Maryland. Eve is also a member of the St. Mary’s County Historical Society, a volunteer member of the St. Mary’s County Historic Preservation Committee and a volunteer at Historic St. Mary’s City.

Learn the basics of threading and operating a sewing machine to make your own reusable, terry lined cleaning cloth!

No experience needed and all materials provided.

Classes are a way to get started but are not required before using our sewing machines. Visit our Makerspace during open hours to use one of the sewing machines available for self-guided customer use. We have the sewing machines and all the tools you'll need, just bring your own material and pattern!

Note for minors: Teenagers are welcome in our Makerspace classes! Customers aged 14+ can use the Makerspace without an adult present; younger customers need an adult present at all times while visiting the Makerspace.

A librarian will read the beginning of the book The Secret of The Old Clock (Nancy Drew volume 1) by Carolyn Keene to children ages 6-12 with their adult caregivers. Come learn how to crochet with a fun and simple craft perfect for any autumn enthusiast.

This is the perfect project for anyone who loves autumn and is wanting to get the hang of crocheting for the first time or wanting to get back into crocheting after a long break.

Materials (such as yarn and hooks) and instructions will be provided. No experience is necessary, though may be beneficial in completing your project by the end of the program! Even if you don't finish the project you will leave with the skills and materials necessary to finish it at home.

This year's selection, No Sense in Wishing by Lawrence Burney, was chosen based on the theme of "Revolution, Reaction, Reform." Burney's collection of personal essays touches on his upbringing in Baltimore, as well as music that has helped shape him:

An essay collection from culture critic Lawrence Burney that is a personal and analytical look at his home city of Baltimore, music from throughout the global Black diaspora, and the traditions that raised him. For fans of Hanif Abdurraqib, Kiese Laymon, and Isaac Fitzgerald.

There are moments throughout our lives when we discover an artist, an album, a film, or a cultural artifact that leaves a lasting impression, helping inform how we understand the world, and ourselves, moving forward. In No Sense in Wishing, Lawrence Burney explores these profound interactions with incisive and energizing prose, offering us a personal and critical perspective on the people, places, music, and art that transformed him. In a time when music is spearheading Black Americans' connection with Africans on The Continent, Burney takes trips to cover the bubbling creative scenes in Lagos and Johannesburg that inspire teary-eyed reflections of self and belonging. Seeing his mother perform as the opening act at a Gil Scott-Heron show as a child inspires an essay about parent-child relationships and how personal taste is often inherited. And a Maryland crab feast with family facilitates an assessment of how the Black people in his home state have historically improvised paths for their liberation.

Taking us on a journey from the streets of Baltimore to the concert halls of Lagos, No Sense in Wishing is a kaleidoscopic exploration of Burney's search for self. With its gutsy and uncompromising criticism alongside intimate personal storytelling, it's like an album that hits all the right notes, from a promising writer on the rise.

Interested in local history and archaeology? This presentation investigates Southern Maryland 18th-century history through the lens of a plantation house.

Excavation revealed a detached kitchen/slave quarter at Sellmans Connexion, a Southern Maryland plantation house (now called Woodlawn) built in 1735 and substantially enlarged in 1841. Such service buildings commonly occurred on "showcase" plantations in the Chesapeake Region circa 1740-1864 (until Emancipation), typically housing the enslaved people who worked in them. Architectural survey data, architectural material, cooking utensils, and ceramic and glass wares provide a provisional model for detached kitchen assemblages.

This program will be presented by guest speakers Dr. Jim Gibb, Barbara Israel, and Stephen Israel.

Are you new to genealogy or just need a refresher on how to improve your research? This four-part series is aimed at helping you form a good foundation to build upon throughout your journey.

Over the course of this series you will learn methodology, what is available online and what repositories have information that can help answer your genealogical questions.

Throughout these sessions you will:

1. Understand how to begin collecting and compile family history information.
2. Learn the importance of sources and documentation.
3. Learn which records provide different types of information.
4. Know the difference between online searching and repositories such as courthouses, cemeteries, historical societies, and state and national archives.

About Our Presenter
Eve Love, a native of St. Mary’s County, is an ardent student of history and genealogy. Her interest in family history began as a young adult listening to family stories. She has been conducting personal genealogy research for approximately forty years. Eve is a Member of the St. Mary’s County Genealogical Society and has served as President, 1st Vice President and Secretary. She has attended numerous seminars to expand her knowledge and research techniques and has taught Genealogy Classes at the College of Southern Maryland. Eve is also a member of the St. Mary’s County Historical Society, a volunteer member of the St. Mary’s County Historic Preservation Committee and a volunteer at Historic St. Mary’s City. 

Barb Whipkey, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Lexington Park and LaPlata, MD, will teach us about birds who store food in caches. These are the little birds who hide away a big stash!

Take your crafting to the next level by assembling and binding a mini book from scratch. Registration is required.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll layer paper, fold signatures, and use traditional stitching techniques with a needle and thread to create a beautiful, one-of-a-kind journal. We’ll also explore using a bone folder (or popsicle stick!) to sharpen folds and finish your book with care.

We will be using the saddle stitch technique learned last week in Make Your Own Journal:Simple Book Binding Part 1.
