He is the recipient of two Independent Publisher Book Awards, the Beverly Hills Book Award, the Benjamin Franklin Award, and his novel Floating Staircase was a finalist for the Bram Stoker Award. He lives in Maryland with his wife, Debra, and their two daughters. When he’s not working on his next book, he’s fronting the rock band VEER.

One Maryland One Book Book Discussion: What's Mine and Yours

When: Monday, November 07 - 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Where: Charlotte Hall Library in Meeting Room
Age Group: Adult

Join us for a thoughtful discussion of the 2022 One Maryland One Book selection, "What’s Mine and Yours" by Naima Coster.

A description of the book provided by the publisher reads, “When a county initiative in the Piedmont of North Carolina forces the students at a mostly black public school on the east side to move across town to a nearly all-white high school on the west, the community rises in outrage. For two students, quiet and aloof Gee and headstrong Noelle, these divisions will extend far beyond their schooling. As their paths collide and overlap over the course of thirty years, their two seemingly disconnected families begin to form deeply knotted, messy ties that shape the trajectory of their lives. . . With gorgeous prose, Naima Coster explores the unique organism that is every family: what breaks them apart and how they come back together."

Just in time for National Novel Writing Month, Maryland author, Amy Schisler, will give a talk on how to incorporate your own experiences into your writing to help better bring your stories to life.

For a work of fiction to be worth reading, it must be authentic. Research is a big part of writing, but knowledge and experience are crucial for your writing. We’ll discuss turning your knowledge and experience into unforgettable stories people will be clamoring to get their hands on.

Amy Schisler is a novelist, poet, children’s book author, spiritual writer, blogger, reader, and avid traveler with years of professional experience in all manner of writing-related endeavors. Amy’s first novel, A Place to Call Home, a romantic suspense, debuted in 2014, and her much-loved Chincoteague Island Trilogy has won numerous literary awards.

Amy lives on the Eastern Shore of Maryland with her family. When she’s not writing, Amy can usually be found hiking in the Rocky Mountains, most often with a good book in her hand.

For more information about her works, visit her website or search for her books in our catalog.

Nonfiction Book Club: Between the World and Me

When: Thursday, November 17 - 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Where: Online in Zoom Room 1
Age Group: Adult

Come to the Nonfiction Book Club to learn about interesting information and true stories! We will meet via Zoom on the last Thursday of every month.

Whether you are very familiar with nonfiction or only read it occasionally, this book club will have something for you, as we will cover a variety of topics, from biographies to science to self-help.

This month's pick is Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. A description of the book provided by the publisher reads, "For Ta-Nehisi Coates, history has always been personal. At every stage of his life, he's sought in his explorations of history answers to the mysteries that surrounded him--most urgently, why he, and other black people he knew, seemed to live in fear ... In [this book], Coates takes readers along on his journey through America's history of race and its contemporary resonances through a series of awakenings--moments when he discovered some new truth about our long, tangled history of race, whether through his myth-busting professors at Howard University, a trip to a Civil War battlefield with a rogue historian, a journey to Chicago's South Side to visit aging survivors of 20th century America's 'long war on black people,' or a visit with the mother of a beloved friend who was shot down by the police."

Find Between the World and Me in the catalog!

Small Houses, Big Woods: Archaeology of Tenants and Small Landholders

When: Monday, November 28 - 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Where: Online in Zoom Room 1
Age Group: Adult

Dr. James Gibb will discuss the archaeological findings of small landholders.

Archaeologists commonly encounter the remains of small houses, often only 600 square feet or less, in the midst of naturally reforested tracts. Most of the remains lie directly on the surface, not yet covered by slowly developing soils. Buildings constructed of inexpensive materials often salvaged from other sites, and the unprepossessing stove parts, tea kettles, and unadorned plates suggest poor, socially isolated households. Recent finds, however, suggest extraordinary connections with national and international events. In this presentation, I explore the research potential of these often overlooked, dismissed archaeological sites.
