Interested in starting your genealogical research but do not know how to start? Join us as we provide an overview of Ancestry Library Edition, a free service available at St. Mary's County Library.

Ancestry is one of the most well known and most utilized genealogical databases. St. Mary’s County Library offers this service free to anyone in the Library, allowing individuals to perform their research. During this introductory class, we will offer answers and clarification, along with a tutorial of how to use Ancestry to research one’s own genealogy and family history. We will cover understanding the sources provided, identifying where to acquire more information, and learning how to get started using Ancestry.

This program is also being offered on Friday, November 12th from 2-4 pm.

Local Teen Artists will be painting murals on four of the windows in the Teen Area of the Leonardtown Library!

Local teen artists will submit their concept ideas for a mural to be painted on one of our windows. These concepts are to be themed around the season they will remain on the windows. Four will be selected. These four artists will be given supplies to paint a window in the Teen Area of the Leonardtown Library. They may be assisted by friends, and will be provided snacks!

Art submissions will open on 7/21. Please submit your draft art by 8/29.

Looking to help your student thrive in school? Dealing with homeschool burnout? Learn all about Library study resources and meet other home teachers! Registration required because of arts and crafts.

We will focus on our library services that are geared towards children and families. This includes help with searching the catalog for different subjects, using our online Homework Helper, our Library Apps, Events that we offer, and so much more! We’ll also go over navigating the library website and a mini tour of the Lexington Park Library. You’ll leave with a whole collection of bookmarks, printouts, and confidence in accessing all the benefits your library card grants you.

This event is intended for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities as well as their friends, family, and caregivers.

Ancestral narratives are a way of sharing family's stories with future generations. Genealogists, no matter their age or experience, will enjoy learning about this useful way of preserving history.

This year's One Maryland, One Book selection, Kin: Rooted in Hope, written by Carole Boston Weatherford with art by Jeffery Boston Weatherford, reflects the theme, "What We Collect/What We Tell." Their book, written for upper elementary schoolers and up, focuses on the Weatherford's own ancestors who were among the founders of Maryland and gives these individuals voice through enslavement, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.

In this program, we'll discuss what ancestral narratives are and the basic steps for recording your own. They can be useful for anything from school assignments to heavy genealogy work. As exemplified by this year's book, they are a great way to pass on the stories of our past in a way that captivates readers.

Therapy animals from Pets on Wheels are visiting the library! Friends of all ages are invited to practice reading with a furry friend, or just enjoy some pets and snuggles.

SMCHD will be providing community members with a variety of health department resources for programs.

They will provide information about tobacco cessation programs, free colon cancer screenings, colonoscopies, and mammograms programs, health insurance/Medicaid information, information about asthma programs, and so much more. Stop by and say hello - you'll get a chance to spin their trivia question wheel to learn more about how to stay healthy, and will be able to enter a raffle to win a free item! The Maryland Food Bank’s Mobile Market is coming to visit!

Stop by to shop from our “grocery store on wheels” and receive free nonperishable food items, fresh produce, and other non-food necessities while supplies last. 

The Three Oaks Center will connect those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to resources in the tri county that can help them with benefits, mental health, substance abuse, housing, and more.

They will also be completing referrals for service on site and collecting paperwork to enroll in their programs and/or offer shelter if available.

Karen Stone, Division Manager of the St. Mary's County Museums, is back with new information on the Black Diamond Incident!

It has always been said that not a single life was lost during the hunt for John Wilkes Booth. This is said with pride, as it should be. If only it were true.

In the 1860’s, life on the Potomac River was quite different than it is today. Instead of the calm open waters, the river was the frontline of battle. The Potomac was the main lifeline out of Washington D.C. and for the federal government it was the dividing line between the warring sections of the North and South. For the people of St. Mary’s County, it was the source of their livelihood and much of their food; and for some, it became their final resting place. This is a story of that river, and of the men whose lives were lost in the aftermath of the Civil War, in the hunt for the presidential assassin John Wilkes Booth. This is for those 87 men and their families, so that they will no longer be forgotten.

This event is part of the Southern Maryland 250th Semiquincentennial, Maryland 250th, and America 250th celebration, commemorating Southern Maryland's contributions to our nation's founding.

This introductory, in-person class will cover how to use the Cricut Maker 3, an electronic die-cutting machine, to make clean and precise cuts on adhesive vinyl to embellish a Fall themed votive candle. Participants will also learn the basics of Cricut Design Space, the software used to create endlessly customizable designs. No experience necessary, all materials provided.

Everyone is welcome to visit the Leonardtown Library Makerspace during open hours to use the Cricut to create whatever you can imagine! Customers need to have their own Cricut Design Space online account and bring their own material, but we have all the equipment and tools you'll need! Join us in person for a panel featuring voices of teens to local leaders, sharing different perspectives on Southern Maryland history. Discover how personal perspectives are developed that shape how you see the past, why those views matter, and how understanding different perspectives can improve your relationships, make you a better leader and help our communities work together more effectively. 

After the panel, take part in small, guided group discussions to share your own ideas, experiences and stories. How can understanding different perspectives help strengthen Southern Maryland as a community? What practical steps can you and our local leaders take to foster mutual respect, cooperation and a shared sense of place and history?

When you register, you will be asked for the race with which you identify. This is voluntary.  We ask for this to create diversified small groups. The same is true regarding age.

Each year, thousands of Marylanders read one book as a community and, this year, the theme we focus on is “What We Collect/What We Tell”.

This year's One Maryland, One Book is "Kin: Rooted in Hope" written by Carole Boston Weatherford with art by Jeffery Boston Weatherford. Their book focuses on the Weatherford's own ancestors who were among the founders of Maryland and gives these individuals voice through enslavement, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.

In this program, we invite you to come and create a photo album. Each participant will receive one 8" x 8" photo album along with access to a variety of crafting supplies including stickers, decorative paper, markers, washi tape, and more. You supply the photos! There is a limit of one photo album per participant.

Whether you're capturing generations of memories or starting a new tradition, this program is a perfect opportunity to tell your family’s story through photos and art.

Sarah Hlubik is a paleoarchaeologist specializing in the origins of human behavior, culture, and fire use. Her research focuses on the Koobi Fora region in Kenya, a rich fossil and archaeological area. By examining evidence of fire use and its impact on human evolution, she aims to understand its effect on the broader fire ecology and natural landscapes in the Pleistocene.

World on the Move: 250,00 years of Human Migration was developed by the American Anthropological Association, together with the Smithsonian’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and Smithsonian Exhibits. It is administered by the American Library Association’s Public Programs Office.

The Three Oaks Center will connect those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to resources in the tri county that can help them with benefits, mental health, substance abuse, housing, and more.

No experience needed and all materials provided.

Classes are a way to get started but are not required before using our sewing machines. Visit our Makerspace during open hours to use one of the sewing machines available for self-guided customer use. We have the sewing machines and all the tools you'll need, just bring your own material and pattern!

Note for minors: Teenagers are welcome in our Makerspace classes! Customers aged 14+ can use the Makerspace without a guardian present; younger customers need an adult present at all times while visiting the Makerspace. Waivers are no longer required.

Art doesn't have to be intimidating, or time consuming. Instead, it can be a chance to explore creativity, the ability to make mistakes, and an opportunity to try something new.

Delve into the Declaration of Independence with us. What power did it hold? How did it change the course of American history? Dr. Jim Gibb will present on this revolutionary document.

While not a legal document as such—it was a declaration of will and lacked the force of law—the Declaration asserted the Second Continental Congress’ theory of government. This theory proposed that government was a trust instrumentality of a society designed to secure members of that society in their persons and property, and to protect their rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. It says nothing about how the new nation would govern itself. This presentation is a conversation about those principles.

During this series, we will explore the deficiencies of the initial Articles of Confederation, the further refinement of such ideas as the sovereignty of the People, and the development of our Nation’s “owners’ manual,” the document that instructs government as to its role in American society and the US Constitution’s constraints on government.

This presentation will be held live over Zoom. It will also be recorded and uploaded to the St. Mary's County Library YouTube channel.
