One Maryland One Book Author Tour with Lisa See
Join Maryland Humanities and co-hosts, Calvert Library, for the 2020 One Maryland One Book Virtual Author Tour with Lisa See.
She’ll be speaking about her New York Times best-selling book, The Island of Sea Women. This year's One Maryland One Book is the story of the complex and decades-long friendship between Young-sook and Mi-ja, two women living on the Korean island of Jeju. Readers can follow their journey from the Japanese occupation of the 1930's to the 21st century.

This home die-cutting machine can be used for cutting paper, felt, vinyl, and fabric. Presenter will demonstrate how a design is created on the computer and sent to the Cricut machine for cutting. Session 1: October 8, 2020 – Introduction to Cricut
This session will go over the basics of the Cricut machine, its uses & the different items you can create with it. This class show participants how to sign up for Design Space in order to participate in the next class.
Session 2: October 15, 2020 – Design Space 101
This session teaches participants an in-depth way to use Cricut Design Space. Users will learn how to upload an image to create their own custom design. This session will walk through how to create a project in Design Space & share it online for others to use it.
Session 3: October 22, 2020 – Creating Your Project
This session will walk participants on how to complete their final project. This class will cover weeding, and the application of a decal to a cup. Participants will need to pick up a crafting kit at the branch noted on their registration form before this session. There is ONE kit max per registrant.

This program is designed for registrants to receive personalized help with searching for a job through the Maryland Workforce Exchange (MWE). Maryland Department of Labor job coaches will meet with you one-on-one in a 45 minute virtual session through Google Meets. Appointments are available at 9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:15 p.m. These meetings will be virtual. You will need a device and internet connection to participate.

The first in this 4 Part Series will focus on the importance of Movement/Mobility. There are many ways to incorporate gentle movement throughout your day. How can you care for your joints so they don't ache as often? What are some things you can do for your back/knees/shoulders?
Part 2: Nutrition, Monday, September 28th
Session two will focus on the importance of Nutrition. We all know what to do, but doing it can be another thing entirely! In this session we will discuss Mindful Eating and give you simple, real-life tips on eating (and preparing) solid, healthy meals. Cooking for a busy family? Have multiple eating preferences in your house? Cathy and Jenn have tips for that too!
Part 3: Mindfulness, Monday, October 19th
Session three will focus on the importance of Mindfulness. Mindfulness has become a bit of a buzz word. Cathy and Jenn will provide education on how to actually bring more peace and calm into your life by practicing awareness.
Part 4: Building Strength, Monday, November 2nd
The fourth and final session will focus on the importance of Heart/Bone Health. As we age it is important to care for our heart and bones properly. Different ages require different exercises, guidelines, etc. Do you know what you should be doing at your age for maximum heart/bone strength? It is never too late to start and you may be surprised at how "easy" it can be.

Acrylic on Canvas with Jamie Naluai: Moonlit Forest
Jamie Naluai will lead participants through painting a moonlit forest in acrylic paint on canvas.

You can get any brand of acrylic paint but make sure it’s in a tube and not craft paint in the bottles. The size depends on how big your canvas is and if you will be using the paint for more projects.

Meet Writer/Journalist Emily Cataneo: The Island of Sea Women, One Maryland One Book Event
Journalist, Emily Cataneo, will be joining us live to talk about the real sea women of the Island of Jeju, in South Korea.
Join us in welcoming Emily Cataneo, writer, journalist, and the co-founder of the Redbud Writing Project, a creative writing educational organization for adults that is based in Raleigh, North Carolina. As a journalist, Emily has written about a variety of topics for venues such as the Boston Globe, the Financial Times, Slate, NPR, and more. In 2017, she traveled to the island of Jeju in South Korea, where she interviewed one of the haenyeo (a woman diver of Korea) and learned about their intriguing, ancient culture. She wrote about this experience for the travel website Roads & Kingdoms later that year. Emily will be joining us live to talk about these "real sea women".

One Shot Role Playing Game
A rare day off for our adventurer's turns into a barnyard battle as a talking sheep interrupts them with an important quest.
The players will face fearsome foes including giant apes, evil wizards, and.....a bed? This adventure is 3rd level and the characters will be made available ahead of time.
No experience required. Pre-made characters, with a brief overview of the rules. A free Roll20 account is required to play. Microphone required. Character adjustment must be done at least 2 days ahead of the game and must give a list of changes to the dungeon master who will then approve them.
Community Conversations On Race: Acrylic Painting: With Local Artist Monet Brady
Local artist Monet Brady will teach four classes in acrylic painting on Fridays Sept. 18th & 25th and Fridays Oct. 23rd & 30th.
Local Artist Monet Brady will guide participants in creating a new painting each week. During this time, we will have a Q&A with her to talk about her experience in the art world and how her race may have affected it.
This program is part of the Community Conversations on Race.
Each session is a new painting - you do not need to attend all four sessions!
About the artist: Monet Brady has a Fine Arts background with a degree in history and art history. With over 450 painting events under her belt, she has plenty of experience with making sure people have a good time while creating art. Monet loves sharing her skills with those around her. She incorporates her technical know-how with the mastery of letting go and creating. For each class, participants who want to paint will need a 16x20 canvas and red, yellow, blue, white, and black acrylic paint. A large square brush, medium round brush, and small detail brush are recommended for use. Crafty Creations : A One Maryland One Book Discussion
Discuss the 2020 One Maryland One Book, "The Island of Sea Women" while crafting!
Join us in an informal virtual discussion of the 2020 One Maryland One book “The Island of Sea Women" and follow along with us while we create a craft based on the themes surrounding the book. For the craft you will need an 8x8 shadow box, 4-6 small sticks, 20-30 flat pebbles (a variety of sizes), and a hot glue gun. Completing the craft is not required in order to participate in the book discussion.

Community Conversations On Race: Acrylic Painting: With Local Artist Monet Brady
Local artist Monet Brady will teach four classes in acrylic painting on Fridays Sept. 18th & 25th and Fridays Oct. 23rd & 30th.
Local Artist Monet Brady will guide participants in creating a new painting each week. During this time, we will have a Q&A with her to talk about her experience in the art world and how her race may have affected it.
This program is part of the Community Conversations on Race.
Each session is a new painting - you do not need to attend all four sessions!
About the artist: Monet Brady has a Fine Arts background with a degree in history and art history. With over 450 painting events under her belt, she has plenty of experience with making sure people have a good time while creating art. Monet loves sharing her skills with those around her. She incorporates her technical know-how with the mastery of letting go and creating. For each class, participants who want to paint will need a 16x20 canvas and red, yellow, blue, white, and black acrylic paint. A large square brush, medium round brush, and small detail brush are recommended for use. Supplies are not required; you are welcome to just watch the sessions, but if you'd like to participate, you'll want at least the basic supplies.
