Cozy Mystery Book Club
Join us on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Leonardtown Library to discuss & do a matching themed activity. Be ready to talk about a genre that puts us all at ease while keeping us on our toes.
Since February is Black History Month, I thought it only fitting to spotlight a BIPOC cozy author.
The theme for February is Magical Mysteries and we will be reading A Spell for Trouble (2020) by Esme Addison.
Please feel free to bring your favorite tea to enjoy while we discuss some herbal magic. Tea bags will also be provided, just be sure to bring a mug!
The first book in the Enchanted Bay Mysteries begins with a trip to Bellamy Bay, which, as usual, is full of chatter about the apothecary owned by Alexandra Daniels’ aunt and cousins. She hasn’t seen them in over 20 years since her mother’s tragic death, but even she knows something is wrong when her aunt is suddenly accused of murder. After all, her aunt and her cousins are all herbal healers. Why would one of them suddenly poison someone? Or is this all rooted in mysterious affairs, rivalries, and rumors of mermaids and magic? Are these secrets really worth killing over?

Recognizing Our Past
Join the Library in welcoming author, historian, and researcher, Daryl T. Hinmon, in discussing his works and his efforts to celebrate lesser-known figures in Black History.
Hinmon will discuss the remarkable achievements of formerly enslaved African American ancestors and their descendants. Anything of value is typically hidden by nature, or other people, and it takes work to unearth valuable gems that will increase your worth. True Black History is one of those gems that was hidden from our enslaved ancestors because the true knowledge of their history would have made them 'forever unfit to be slaves'.
Your grade school education left you with the very false impression that ALL slaves were submissive, timid, illiterate, severely oppressed & dirt poor. Some may have been, but many were not. A vast number of enslaved Africans fought back, became educated, earned great wealth and purchased their freedom, yet you know little to nothing about them. Come discover and be inspired by their intimately documented histories full of grit, determination and tenacity to succeed despite any obstacles.
Daryl T. Hinmon is an acclaimed local author of two books: Slaves With Swag: The Negroes Your History Teacher Forgot To Mention and Black Gold: Remarkable Achievements of Formerly Enslaved African Americans & Their Descendants. A local author, researcher, and historian, the Library welcomes Daryl in discussing his works, his research, and his approach to understanding history, and how we, as a community, may better look to understand how much of American History is Black History, and the incredible lives lived by so many individuals not taught in many curriculums.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Daryl T. Hinmon earned a Bachelor's degree with Highest Honors from Morgan State University and a Summa Cum Laude Master's degree from the Florida Institute of Technology. Through all his schooling, Daryl has always loved the History discipline, but disliked the manner in which Africans and African Americans were portrayed in the curriculum. Consequently, he has performed many years of independent study to discover the rest of the story, which he shares with the rest of the world by publishing history books written from the Black perspective.

Nonfiction Book Club: The Splendid and the Vile
Come to the Nonfiction Book Club to learn about interesting information and true stories! We will meet via Zoom on the last Thursday of every month.
Whether you are very familiar with nonfiction or only read it occasionally, this book club will have something for you, as we will cover a variety of topics, from biographies to science to self-help.
This month's pick is The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz by Erik Larson. A description of the book provided by the publisher reads, "The #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Devil in the White City and Dead Wake delivers a fresh and compelling portrait of Winston Churchill and London during the Blitz. On Winston Churchill's first day as prime minister, Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next twelve months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold the country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally-and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows, in cinematic detail, how Churchill taught the British people 'the art of being fearless'... The Splendid and the Vile takes readers out of today's political dysfunction and back to a time of true leadership, when-in the face of unrelenting horror-Churchill's eloquence, courage, and perseverance bound a country, and a family, together."

Seventeenth-Century Dutch Pots in Maryland Middens
Dr. James Gibb will use an archaeological lens to discuss findings from a 17th-century plantation in Calvert County.
The peg-legged, one-eyed, cutlass-wielding pirate is a mainstay of comedic movies and television advertisements. Evidence from a 17th-century plantation site in southern Calvert County suggests a less colorful image: common merchantmen smuggling bales of fabric and crates of ceramics. In this illustrated presentation, Dr. Gibb will explore restrictions on the importation of non-British goods to Maryland and the evidence for smuggling in archaeological deposits dating to the 1650s and 1660s.
Register with an email address to receive the Zoom link the day before the event.
