Reading List
March 02:The Looming Tower by Lawrence Wright
NATIONAL BESTSELLER • PULITZER PRIZE WINNER • A “heart-stopping account of the events leading up to 9/11” (The New York Times Book Review), this definitive history explains in gripping detail the growth of Islamic fundamentalism, the rise of al-Qaeda, and the intelligence failures that culminated in the attacks on the World Trade Center. Packed with new information and a deep historical perspective, The Looming Tower is a sweeping, unprecedented history of the long road to September 11.

April 06: Bomber by Len Deighton
Len Deighton — one of the masters of twentieth-century espionage fiction — combines his expertise as both historian and novelist in Bomber, the classic World War II novel that relates, in devastating detail, the twenty-four-hour story of an allied bombing raid. Told through the eyes of protagonists on all sides and astonishingly precise in its depictions of planes, weapons, and behind-the-scenes war strategy, this is Len Deighton at his best. An unforgettable portrait of war, both in the air and on the ground.

May 04: The Long Reckoning: A Story of War, Peace, and Redemption in Vietnam  by George Black - Part One: War
and
June 01: The Long Reckoning: A Story of War, Peace, and Redemption in Vietnam - Part Two: Peace
The moving story of how a small group of people—including two Vietnam veterans—forced the U.S. government to take responsibility for the ongoing horrors—agent orange and unexploded munitions—inflicted on the Vietnamese. George Black recounts the inspirational story of the small cast of characters—veterans, scientists, and Quaker-inspired pacifists, and their Vietnamese partners—who used their moral authority, scientific and political ingenuity, and sheer persistence to attempt to heal the horrors that were left in the wake of the military engagement in Southeast Asia. Their intersecting story is one of reconciliation and personal redemption, embedded in a vivid portrait of Vietnam today, with all its startling collisions between past and present, in which one-time mortal enemies, in the endless shape-shifting of geopolitics, have been transformed into close allies and partners.

The Long Reckoning is being published on the fiftieth anniversary of the day the last American combat soldier left Vietnam.

Stroller Squad Fitness Storytime

When: Tuesday, March 05 - 9:30am - 10:30am
Where: Leonardtown Library in Meeting Rooms 1&2
Age Groups: Toddler, Preschool, Baby, Adult

Our friends from SPICE Studio will teach a stroller fitness class, followed by a storytime presented by the library, and a craft provided by SPICE!

SPICE Studio will provide a 30-min workout incorporating power walking, jogging, and/or running with functional interval training to help you build endurance, strength, and core. Caregivers are led through movements that train their bodies for mom (or dad, or other caregiver) life. Suitable for all levels of fitness, no matter where you are in your fitness journey. Babies are there with you the entire time and entertained with whatever it takes to help you get in your workout for the day.

Q: What do I need to bring?
A: Your stroller, your little(s), a yoga mat for core work, water for you and your baby, a towel if you get sweaty. Sunscreen, bug spray, and hats are also recommended.

Q: What should I wear? What should my baby wear?
A: Dress in athletic attire and running shoes. Also dress for the weather and in layers that you can remove as the workout progresses. Please also dress your baby for the weather – blankets, hats, etc.

Q: Do I need a jogging stroller?
A: Jogging strollers are not required. Most walking, jogging, or running will be on sidewalks or roads. Make sure your stroller is sturdy and also has a working brake as strollers will be parked at stations.

Q: What time should I arrive?
A: Try to arrive a few minutes before class begins to give you time to set up your stroller and get your baby settled. Warm-up will begin right at 9:30am.

Q: Can my child get out of the stroller and walk with me?
A: For safety reasons, all babies and children must be buckled into their strollers from warm-up to cool down. This also allows YOU to focus on your workout. While some kiddos may fuss and cry at first, we promise they will adjust and we are there to help you every step of the way with whatever it takes to keep them entertained to allow you to focus on you.

Q: What if it rains or if the weather is inclement?
A: Depending on the level of the rain at class-time, we will have an indoor option available.

Join Karen Stone, Division Manager of the St. Mary's County Museums, for a special seminar for Maryland Day.

Although we teach about the Big 3 colonies in early America – Jamestown, Virginia, Plimoth, Massachusetts, and St. Mary’s City, Maryland –as three distinct places, the reality was that they had a lot of interaction. That is to be expected of Virginia and Maryland – they can see each other after all, but there was some with Plymouth as well. This presentation will take a look at who knew who, and how they knew each other, in the early days of Maryland.

It can be any cozy book, series, or author that you enjoy. Just come prepared to share and get some good recommendations from your peers. Something you suggest may even be selected for a future book club meeting! A list of all the books that we discuss will be sent out after the meeting.

Looking for possible books to read and bring to discuss? Try searching for cozy mysteries in our catalog or look for digital downloads on Libby and Hoopla!

Join us for this virtual archaeology presentation! Guest speaker Dr. Jim Gibb will discuss the significance of a nineteenth-century barn constructed in Southern Maryland.

Frederick Helb, a tanner who had emigrated from Wittenberg, Germany, to the US in 1847, built a Pennsylvania Standard open-forebay bank barn in 1881. The event is notable because he had it built in Southern Maryland, an area then replete with barns, but virtually all of which were louvered ground barns designed to cure tobacco. The barn’s design and the available archival material for Frederick Helb suggest that he opted for the German-Swiss tradition of bank barn building, as transplanted to southeastern Pennsylvania and beyond, because this familiar form best met his industrial needs which revolved around livestock to serve his lumbering and tanning interests, rather than the cultivation and curing of tobacco. The barn stands at the intersection of ethnic tradition and industrial capitalism, each coloring the expression of the other.
