How Poetry Brings History to the Present Mind: Kin: Rooted in Hope
Each year, thousands of Marylanders read one book as a community. This year, the theme is “What We Collect/What We Tell”. Participants will meet to discuss the book and write their own poems.
This year's One Maryland, One Book is "Kin: Rooted in Hope" written by Carole Boston Weatherford with art by Jeffery Boston Weatherford. Their book focuses on the Weatherford's own ancestors who were among the founders of Maryland and gives these individuals voice through enslavement, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.
This program combines a book discussion group with a poetry writing session. Participants are invited to bring in a family photo, artifact, etc. that has multi-generational ties, and write a poem honoring that memory by adding details that breathe new life into it. Paper and writing utensils provided, no experience needed!
Find your own copy of Kin in our catalog or on our digital apps, Libby and the Palace Project.

Native Plant Swap and Seed Swap : at the Front Yard
This free event offers both experienced and new gardeners a chance to add native plants to their yards. In doing so, you will be creating habitat for our native birds, bees and butterflies.
If you're new to gardening with native plants, this event is the place to get started! Meet and chat with native-plant enthusiasts, view native plants in the Front Yard gardens, and take home free plants and seeds!
If you're an experienced native gardener, please spread the joy by bringing your favorite plants and seeds to swap and share.
Strange as it sounds, we're trying to prevent the spread of invasive jumping worms, so please follow these simple steps when bringing your plants to the event:
Dig up your plants.
Shake the dirt off the roots.
Gently rinse the roots clean.
Label each plant (include the botanical name if you can).
Bring them to the Swap & Share in a bucket of water or wrapped in wet paper and tucked in a plastic bag.
For more information, contact Liz Curtz, Friends of St Clements Bay, at curtzeli@gmail.com or Marlene Smith, Wild Ones Chesapeake Bay, @ nikhaven@comcast.net

Cozy Mystery Book Club
Join us to discuss a different cozy mystery on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Leonardtown Library. Be ready to talk about a genre that puts us all at ease while keeping us on our toes.
This program will be held inside the Library in the Maryland Room, rather than the usual Meeting Room.
In honor of spooky season, this month we will be discussing The Village Library Demon-Hunting Society (2024) by C. M. Waggoner.
The number of bodies that librarian Sherry Pinkwhistle keeps finding (and killers she's been catching) is starting to concern her. Her neighbors, however, don't seem surprised. As the body count rises, Sherry starts to become convinced that the cause of these deaths is a bit more... unnatural. When a friend ends up dead and her cat, Lord Thomas Crowell, suddenly becomes possessed by a demon, she starts to worry she may have to become an exorcist as well as an amateur sleuth. Luckily, she discovers that her village has its own "Demon-Hunting Society." With their help, she may be able to solve the murder AND get rid of the demon possessing her cat.
Find physical copies in our Library catalog or check out the eBook or digital audiobook versions on Libby or Palace Project.

Articles of Confederation: Towards a More Perfect Union: A Series
What were the Articles of Confederation? What did this agreement set out to do, and what made it ineffective in the end? Attend this presentation with guest speaker Dr. Jim Gibb to find out!
The Second Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation as a contract that defined the relationship existing between the sovereign States. This presentation explores the practical aspects of that contract, informed by principles, but in the end unwieldly and inadequate to the needs of the war and to overcoming obstacles confronting the New Republic.
During this series, we will explore the deficiencies of the initial Articles of Confederation, the further refinement of such ideas as the sovereignty of the People, and the development of our Nation’s “owners’ manual,” the document that instructs government as to its role in American society and the US Constitution’s constraints on government.
This presentation will be held live over Zoom. It will also be recorded and uploaded to the St. Mary's County Library YouTube channel.
If you would like to attend this event live and/or watch the recording, please register with an email address to receive the Zoom link the day before the event. The YouTube link to the recording will be emailed to everyone who registers for this program.
