Maryland Coalition of Families is a statewide nonprofit organization that provides support, guidance, and hope to families who have a child with a mental health challenge.

Come meet a member of the team and discover how we can support your family’s journey. Our free family peer support services help parents and caregivers connect to resources and navigate complex systems to ensure their child is receiving all the support they need.  All our Family Peer Support Specialists are here because they've been there too.  Their lived experience is a welcome resource for parents and caregivers who need help with their child's 504 or IEP plans.  We offer several evidence-based interventions and programs to help families feel less isolated and more connected to others in similar situations We will be providing resources and answer any questions you may have.

Karen Stone, Division Manager of the St. Mary's County Museums, will give a special seminar on our local history.

Maryland's story begins on St. Clement's Island, where the Ark and the Dove landed in March 1634. The Island then changed hands a number of times until its final designation as a state park.

This talk will cover the Island's role in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War, and World Wars I & II, and will include highlights of the colorful history of the Blackistone Lighthouse, including its destruction in the 1950's, and its eventual reconstruction in 2008.

This event is part of the Southern Maryland 250th Semiquincentennial, Maryland 250th, and America 250th celebration, commemorating Southern Maryland's contributions to our nation's founding.

This is a FREE hybrid event put on by Historic Sotterley with presenter Dr. Tayzhuan Glover. Join in-person at Historic Sotterley OR virtually. Registration is required.

During the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain, hundreds of enslaved men, women, and children in the Chesapeake, Georgia, Florida, and Louisiana were able to secure their freedom by offering aid to the British. Following the war, many of these freedom-seekers were resettled in Nova Scotia and Trinidad. This presentation will use American and British colonial archives to follow the journey to freedom of the enslaved men, women, and children from Historic Sotterley who were resettled in Trinidad in 1815, where they laid the foundation for Trinidad’s “Merikin” descendant community.

Dr. Tayzhuan Glover is currently a Mellon Humanities Postdoctoral Research Fellow for the National Park Service where he researches and interprets the legacy of enslaved people from the Chesapeake who joined the Colonial Marines during the War of 1812.

Join us to discuss a different cozy mystery on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Leonardtown Library. Be ready to talk about a genre that puts us all at ease while keeping us on our toes.

It's Summer vacation season which means it's the perfect time to read Every Time I Go on Vacation, Someone Dies by Catherine Mack (2024), the first in her Vacation Mysteries series.

Best selling author Eleanor Dash just wants to get through her Italian book tour and then kill off the main character of her Vacation Mysteries series. However, someone seems to want to kill the character's real life inspiration, a handsome and infuriating con man. As life begins to imitate her books, Eleanor is enlisted to help solve the case. Theories are thrown around and rivalries, rifts, broken hearts, and more are revealed, but who is the person literally trying to get away with murder?

Find a copy in the Library catalog or download it virtually via our Libby and Palace Project apps.

Journey through the deep prehistory of St. Mary’s County. Uncover the layers of migration and settlement that have shaped this region and understand their lasting impacts on local culture and society.

Visit the World on the Move page on our website to learn more about the World on the Move exhibit and additional library programming. Register to receive a reminder email; walk-ins welcome.

Migration is central to the story of humanity from its African roots to the modern-day. Learn about the special connections between Maryland, the mid-Atlantic, and The Gambia, and understand the ongoing challenges many Africans face as they seek new opportunities in their struggles for better lives.

Speaker - Bill Roberts

Bill Roberts is an applied cultural anthropologist and professor of anthropology at St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM). He has traveled and worked in Central and South America, West, Central and East Africa, and Southeast Asia. From 1996 – 2016 he led an international educational exchange program in The Gambia, West Africa, in addition to leading student field trips to Belize, Guatemala, Senegal, and Thailand. Since 2020 Bill has focused on local collaborations with the Feed St. Mary’s county food bank and the St. Mary’s County Health Department.

Migration Journeys is a thought-provoking series that will offer valuable insights into the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of people who have traversed our state and nation, continents and oceans. Through the insights of expert speakers from the St. Mary's College of Maryland's Department of Anthropology, we explore human movement and its role in shaping history, culture, and society and the factors that influenced these migrations.

Julia A. King is the George B. and Willma Reeves Endowed Chair in the Liberal Arts professor of anthropology at St. Mary's College of Maryland, where she researches, teaches, and writes about early American and Indigenous history, archaeology, and culture. She has received recognition for her research from the Society for Historical Archaeology, the Society for Ethnohistory, and the William and Mary Quarterly, among others.

World on the Move: 250,00 years of Human Migration was developed by the American Anthropological Association, together with the Smithsonian’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and Smithsonian Exhibits. It is administered by the American Library Association’s Public Programs Office.

"Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses." Join us for a history talk and Q&A with Historian Paul Rose on the topic of Ellis Island.

Visit the World on the Move page on our website to learn more about the World on the Move exhibit and additional Library programming.

Ellis Island, located in the New York Harbor, once the busiest immigrant inspection and processing station in the United States.

"From 1892 to 1924, Ellis Island was America's largest and most active immigration station, where over 12 million immigrants were processed. On average, the inspection process took approximately 3-7 hours. For the vast majority of immigrants, Ellis Island truly was an "Island of Hope" - the first stop on their way to new opportunities and experiences in America. For the rest, it became the "Island of Tears" - a place where families were separated and individuals were denied entry into the United States." - The National Parks Service

Paul Rose is a researcher at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum but is not acting a representative of the institution in this presentation.

Our speakers will explore the local tradition of stuffed ham and the migration of families from Southern Maryland to Kentucky. Walk-ins are welcome! Register to receive email/text reminders.

Visit the World on the Move page on our website to learn more about the World on the Move exhibit and additional Library programming.

This event celebrates the culinary heritage and the bonds between communities brought together by the journey of families who carried their traditions across regions. Enjoy samples of stuffed ham from local restaurants and delve into the stories, recipes, and genealogical connections that have been passed down through generations.

World on the Move: 250,00 years of Human Migration was developed by the American Anthropological Association, together with the Smithsonian’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and Smithsonian Exhibits. It is administered by the American Library Association’s Public Programs Office.

While we have speakers discussing the local tradition of stuffed ham and the migration of families between these regions, we are still seeking a speaker who can bridge the gap and connect these two aspects. If you or someone you know can provide insights into the link between the stuffed ham tradition in Southern Maryland and its spread to Kentucky, please reach out to us. We are eager to complete our lineup of speakers and create a rich, comprehensive experience for attendees.
