Abstract piece with yellow paint
Yanhui Kuang, California, “Survivors of a Disaster” – 2020, full of thorns and hardships, but there is hope to live in the love of Christ. Acrylic on canvas
portrait of a woman with brown hair and a blue shirt outside
Vivianne Tapponnier, Leonardtown, “Meanwhile, During Home Art Class” – Mom asked me to color a self portrait during quarantine home art class.
Desolation A Short Story by April Combs “Everything will be different.” He abruptly slammed the car door. My nerves were being thrown around like the loose gravel that he had driven over. I heard two beeps and then watched him descend down the hill toward the condemned house. I sat in silence. The solar rays piercing through the car window only made me wince more behind my sunglasses. Normally, I cherish the sunshine and warm weather; given the situation that I was in, I couldn’t take the pleasant weather for granted. My face mask was suffocating me. He was trying to control me. Without bringing his hands around my neck, he was suffocating me with the mind games and cruel manipulation. I felt as though I could never get away from him. I already knew that he had locked the car doors, so I didn’t try getting out of the car. Even if I did get out of the car and run away, I still wouldn’t be safe. I couldn’t get a hotel room because I didn’t have any funds of my own; the roadside havens were closed indefinitely. This dictatorship banned currency from women. He had his eBay “store” for selling his hoarded supply of Wet Wipes and Charmin for three times the retail price. My immediate family was cut off from phones and the Internet, but he knew where they had escaped to during the mandatory quarantine. I would wander aimlessly with no food or shelter. There was no hideaway that I could find. My former self would have sat and waited, tears rapidly streaming down my cheeks. He assumed that since I had tested positive for the virus, I was doomed to die. There would be no news coverage of my passing. I was beyond help. I relished proving people wrong. He was among the ninety-five percent of the U.S. population that was unaware of the germ purge. The germ purge was still an underground concept. Shortly after my diagnosis, I had received a text message advertising the germ purge. Great, spam is as ubiquitous as a positive diagnosis for the virus! I replied “C” to confirm acceptance of the trial offer. When I drove to the tanning salon, I really thought that someone was pulling my leg. I know I’m paler than Ivory soap, but I still don’t want the Midas touch. There were two twenty-somethings running “Tanning for Gold”, both dressed in skater attire and adorned with motley tattoo sleeves on their arms. The female silently escorted me to the tanning booth in the adjoining room, while her male counterpart waved an aura scanner from my forehead to my abdomen in ten-second repetitions. Twenty minutes later, the female led me back to the main door. I was taken aback when she touched my arm gently. Although she had spoken monotonously, I would remember her words in a time that I needed hope. As I heard the sound of gravel crunching underfoot, it was time to put the plan into action.
April Combs, “Desolation” – “Desolation” is a short story in which a woman finds herself trapped during the mandatory quarantine.
Abstract ball in yellow, copper, and red.
Bernard Matus, Leonardtown, “Forest” – I enjoy creating digital collages. In this piece I use many photoshop tools, including 3D to create this piece of work.
