What Storm, What Thunder Discussion & Journaling

    When: Wednesday, October 09 - 5:00pm - 7:00pm
Where: Charlotte Hall Library in Meeting Room
    Age Groups: Teen, Adult

Join us to discuss this year’s One Maryland One Book selection, What Storm, What Thunder. We’ll explore the book’s themes and enjoy journaling together, creating fun prompts to inspire creativity!

This year's One Maryland One Book selection, chosen by Maryland Humanities for the theme of "restorative futures," is What Storm, What Thunder by Myriam J. A. Chancy.

At the end of a long, sweltering day, an earthquake of 7.0 magnitude shakes the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince. Award-winning author Myriam J. A. Chancy masterfully charts the inner lives of the characters affected by the disaster—Richard, an expat and wealthy water-bottling executive with a secret daughter; the daughter, Anne, an architect who drafts affordable housing structures for a global NGO; a small-time drug trafficker, Leopold, who pines for a beautiful call girl; Sonia and her business partner, Dieudonné, who are followed by a man they believe is the vodou spirit of death; Didier, an emigrant musician who drives a taxi in Boston; Sara, a mother haunted by the ghosts of her children in an IDP camp; her husband, Olivier, an accountant forced to abandon the wife he loves; their son, Jonas, who haunts them both; and Ma Lou, the old woman selling produce in the market who remembers them all.

Brilliantly crafted, fiercely imagined, and deeply haunting, What Storm, What Thunder is a singular, stunning record, a reckoning of the heartbreaking trauma of disaster, and—at the same time—an unforgettable testimony to the tenacity of the human spirit.

You can find a physical copy of the book in our catalog or download a digital copy on Libby. Come ready to discuss the book and its themes with other community members from various backgrounds. During the discussion, we will work on reflective journals with some creative prompts.

Planning for the Unthinkable: Disaster Preparedness: A One Maryland One Book Program

    When: Wednesday, October 16 - 6:00pm - 7:30pm
Where: Lexington Park Library in Meeting Rooms A&B
    Age Group: Adult

Do you know what to do when a tornado sweeps into your neighborhood or floodwater reaches your doorstep?

Join St. Mary's County Emergency Services Department to learn what can be done now to reduce the impact of disaster later. This workshop will include an interactive educational lecture on how to keep yourself and your loved ones safe in the event of a disaster, a discussion on the area's unique and most common threats, and the opportunity to create your own disaster supply kit with the essentials: food, water, first-aid, tools, and more!

This year's One Maryland One Book selection, What Storm, What Thunder by Myriam J. A. Chancy, shines a harsh light on the reality of natural disasters. It brings into question what one should do as an individual, as a family, and as a community, and what we owe to others in the face of catastrophe. While disasters on this scale are impossible to fully prepare for, communities across the world should know what to do when the unthinkable threatens to upend daily life. One Maryland One Book is a program of Maryland Humanities.

Join us to discuss a different cozy mystery on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Leonardtown Library. Be ready to talk about a genre that puts us all at ease while keeping us on our toes.

Did you know we’ve officially been doing our Cozy Mystery Book Club for TWO YEARS? Our very first book selection was The Murder at the Vicarage by Agatha Christie, so let’s celebrate with another of Christie’s classics!

This month’s selection is The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie (1920), which was her first published novel and the debut of famous Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot.

A refugee of the Great War, Poirot has settled in England near Styles Court, the estate of his wealthy and elderly benefactor, Emily Inglethorp. When Emily is poisoned, leaving the authorities baffled, Poirot must put his prodigious skills to work. Suspects are plentiful and they all have secrets to keep, but no one can outwit Poirot, no matter how many red herrings and plot twists come his way.

R L Forrest: Dairy Farmer, Citizen Scientist, Philanthropist

    When: Monday, October 28 - 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Where: Online in Zoom Room 1
    Age Group: Adult

Come join us for a virtual archaeology presentation!

Guest speaker Dr. Jim Gibb will examine the life of Robert Lee Forrest, whose financial gift led to the development of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Anne Arundel County, MD.

In 1965, the Smithsonian received a bequest of $1.7 million and 360 acres on the Rhode River from a colorful, but enigmatic son of a Baltimore civil engineer, Robert Lee Forrest. Like the Institution’s first patron, James Smithson, Forrest was a life-long bachelor who fathered no children. From his gift the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center was founded. The Smithsonian Environmental Archaeology Laboratory (SEAL Team) is researching this scientific dairy farmer, citizen scientist and Smithsonian patron through deep dives into the archival record and archaeological investigation into his state-of-the-art dairy operation south of Annapolis, Maryland. This illustrated talk is the first public presentation of this unfolding work.

This presentation will be held live over Zoom. It will also be recorded and uploaded to the St. Mary's County Library YouTube channel.

If you would like to attend this event live and/or watch the recording, please register with an email address to receive the Zoom link the day before the event. The YouTube link to the recording will be emailed to everyone who registers for this program.

Hammond General Hospital at Point Lookout

    When: Tuesday, October 29 - 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Where: Leonardtown Library in Meeting Rooms 1&2
    Age Group: Adult

Hammond Hospital was established at Point Lookout in 1862. The staff was a microcosm of A-type personalities that vied for authority. Come to hear their stories and how they all got along…or did they?

In December of 1862, one month after the opening of Hammond Hospital at Point Lookout, there were over 12,000 casualties at Fredericksburg, VA. With a large number of casualties on the Virginia Peninsula and in Northern Virginia, the desperate need for a hospital was confirmed. With the Civil War in full fury, the doctors, nurses, and Daughters of Charity were thrust together to fill this need.

Presenter Susan Youhn serves on the Board of Directors of the Friends of Point Lookout State Park, and is a member of the Maine Camp Hospital Association, a group of living historians reenacting the various roles of female nurses and relief agents during the Civil War. She lectures frequently on the hospital and is currently compiling a book on the medical facilities at Point Lookout.
