When: Thursday, November 02 - 6:00pm - 7:30pm
Where: Leonardtown Library in Makerspace
Age Group: Adult

Have a skirt, dress, kilt that you love, but it doesn't have pockets? Learn how to add your own! Bring a garment to work on and we'll provide the rest!

This will be a hand-sewing based program rather than a machine-sewing one. Sewing skills are not necessarily required, though they will help you with the process.

We will go over all the steps needed to add your own pockets to your clothing so that you will never find yourself lacking somewhere to put your phone, wallet, keys, etc. Needles, thread, and fabric for the pockets will be provided. Just be sure to bring your own clothing item to work on. We highly recommend you select a garment that you are not extremely attached to, incase of any accidents. Items with side-seams may be easier to maneuver your first time, though we will go over how to add pockets to items with or without them.

St. Clement's Island: The Gateway to Indian Country: @ the Lexington Park Library

Where: Lexington Park Library in Meeting Rooms A&B

Join the St. Mary's County Library, along with Dr. Julia King of St. Mary's College of Maryland, in discussing the relations between the early English settlers of Maryland and the Indigenous Peoples.

In March 1634, English settlers landed at St. Clements Island, a story all Marylanders know. But why did the colonists choose St. Clement's Island as their initial beachhead? The answer might surprise you. Archaeology is revealing the presence of large, well-populated Indigenous towns all along this portion of the Potomac River and west, many with histories dating back centuries and even millennia.

The majority of this program will be spent as a workshop, walking through, step-by-step, a search process, from a generic search to a more advanced one.

If you have enjoyed the genealogical sessions offered, and wanted to have a hands on, interactive experience in research, this is the class for you!

Interested in attending more genealogy programs?

Join us at the Lexington Park Library for informative presentations about using Library resources in your genealogical research!

Join us to discuss a different cozy mystery on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Leonardtown Library. Be ready to talk about a genre that puts us all at ease while keeping us on our toes.

This month we'll be discussing The Bangalore Detectives Club (2022) by Harini Nagendra, the first book in the Kaveri & Ramu/The Bangalore Detectives Club series.

When clever, headstrong Kaveri moves to Bangalore to marry handsome young doctor Ramu, she’s resigned herself to a quiet life. But that all changes the night of the party at the Century Club when she spots an uninvited guest hiding in the shadows and a murder is discovered. Kaveri becomes determined to save the innocent, vulnerable woman who is being accused of the crime. She soon finds that sleuthing in a sari isn’t as hard as it seems when you have a talent for mathematics, a head for logic, and a doctor for a husband; and she’s going to need them all to solve this mystery and escape the dangers of Bangalore’s darkest alleyways.

Westwood: An Ancient Native American Site

When: Monday, November 27 - 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Where: Online in Zoom Room 1
Age Group: Adult

Join Dr. James Gibb for this virtual presentation, in which he'll discuss findings from an archaeological site known as Westwood North.

Westwood North, originally identified as a multicomponent Early and Late Archaic site, is a single-component Brewerton Complex site blanketed by redeposited sands and gravels with Transitional and Late Woodland inclusions. The buried A horizon and BE horizon yielded 21 heavily reworked notched projectile points of quartz, quartzite and rhyolite. These buried deposits also produced 150 kg of fire-cracked rock and 6500 pieces of flaked stone, but there is no clear patterning evident across ten 5 ft by 5 ft excavation units. The site is adjacent to a relict tributary of Mattawoman Creek on the Chesapeake coastal plain.

Register with an email address to receive the Zoom link the day before the event.
