Makerspace at Lexington Park Library

We’re building a youth-oriented Makerspace at Lexington Park Library!

During our recent strategic planning process, we discovered that there is an unmet need in Lexington Park for STEAM instruction, literacy activities for children, more emphasis on fine motor skills, and opportunities for families and children of all ages to be able to work together on creative projects. Our Library strives to be a dynamic hub where children and families can explore, learn, and create. The youth-focused makerspace will be a dedicated area equipped with tools, technology, and resources that foster hands-on learning, innovation, and collaboration.

We need the space and furniture in the Library for all this STEAM learning to happen! We plan to build a glass room within the Library with suitable tool storage and adaptable furniture to accommodate all ages, from pre-K to adult.

We have already secured a $20,000 grant from the Maryland State Library Agency to get started. Now we need your help to bring this project to life! Our goal is to reach $100,000 through small and large donations.

Donate today to help us bring this incredible resource to Lexington Park. We can’t wait to see you there!

You can also donate by visiting or sending a check made out to St. Mary’s County Library to Lexington Park Library (21677 FDR Blvd, Lexington Park, MD 20653).

Thank you to these donors for your generosity!

More about our planned Makerspace

For Pre-K and elementary students, some of our unique offerings will be:

  • Fusion beads (children use their fingers or tweezers to create patterns with small beads and an adult uses a heat source to fuse the beads into an artwork, developing pattern making and fine motor skills)
  • 3D pens that build dexterity while creating
  • Pottery wheels for developing fine motor skills with clay
  • An InvenTABLE for the youngest children to create cardboard structures

For school-age youth and families we will offer:

  • Poster printer
  • Cricut Maker and Cricut Press
  • Sewing stations
  • Iron
  • Memory lab for digitizing media
  • Laminator
  • 3D printer
  • Hand tools, soldering irons, glue guns, and electronics kits
  • Laser cutters
  • Additional tools as local needs and funding allow
